Volunteer - Projects and Work Parties

Volunteering opportunities are currently suspended due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are continually monitoring the situation and aim to restart as soon as it is considered safe, efficient and responsible to do so.

Volunteering  - Current Projects - Completed Projects - Team Building Days - Funding

Volunteering. There are many opportunities to get involved in practical volunteering work with SCF, as individuals, families or groups. Our projects have all been agreed with Council and represent a combination of maintenance tasks to improve amenity and conservation tasks to manage, promote and enrich biodiversity. We hope that there will be something for everyone to get involved in, whatever your interests, age and abilities. All work parties are advertised on our facebook page and we sometimes use an online sign up system to manage the maximum numbers on specific work parties.

Funding. In 2018 we were awarded a Community Chest grant from Southampton City Council (SCC) to enable us to run volunteer projects on The Common - the funding allowed us to arrange insurance and buy tools and equipment. SCC also generously provided secure space on The Common for us to store these. We were awarded a second Community grant in 2020 to fund our proposed redevelopment of the demonstration wildlife garden area of the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre but, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we currently feel unable to accept the funding as we feel that it is unlikely that we can deliver the project within the award timelines.

Team Building Days. We are very happy to arrange and host workplace groups for team building days doing practical work on The Common. Past groups have included HSBC, RBS, Ordnance Survey, Ramboll, University of Southampton Faculty of Medicine, Kingfisher and King Edwards School.  More

Current Projects.
Our main current projects are:

(1) Attempts to clear scrub and restore heathland to the south of the Ornamental Lake. More

(2) Restoration of the demonstration wildlife garden in the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre. More

(3) Litter Picks. More

Completed Projects.
(1) A Mural for Hawthorns Activity Room. More

(2) Solent University Student videos. In 2018 and 2019, groups of creative media students from Solent University created a series of promotional videos about The Common for us. More

(3) Improving playpark drainage. When the playpark was redeveloped, the developers got the levels wrong and there was a large depression which flooded regularly, killing the grass. A team of civil engineers from Ramboll came to us for a  corporate volunteering / team building day and dug a properly levelled drainage ditch to take the water away. Council later laid a pipe in the ditch and filled over it.
